The Tennessee Valley Public Power Assoc. (TVPPA) and it’s subsidiary Seven States Power Corp. (7SPC) worked in 2018 to install five Level 2 chargers for employees that park in their parking lot in downtown Chattanooga. After business hours, the chargers are opened up to public charging, and as of early 2019 there is no cost to charge!
The Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) has demonstrated leadership in use of alternative fuels for its fleet since the 1970’s and is a long-standing partner with East Tennessee Clean Fuels Coalition. To encourage electric vehicle use in our community, KUB’s Promenade garage in downtown Knoxville has four Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations that are free for employee and public use.
Oak Ridge National LabDOE Workplace Charging Challenge Partner
ORNL developed a large bank of solar-powered charging stations for their employees, and have energy storage included so that no matter when they are charging, they are refueling with sunshine. The system was installed in 2012-2013, and offers up to 50 vehicles simultaneous Level 2 charging – it is the largest bank of Level 2 systems in Tennessee.

In addition to having several Level 3 options that are free for employees to use in the City/County building in downtown Knoxville, there are 3 parking garages in downtown with 4-6 Level 2 units that are available to staff and citizens and visitors in the downtown area.
Nissan NA HeadquartersDOE Workplace Charging Challenge Partner
Nissan built Level 2 charging equipment for its employees in Tennessee at both the headquarters in Franklin and at the manufacturing facility in Smyrna. This equipment was installed in 2012 during the beginning of the building of the battery plant in Smyrna.
Schneider Electric has installed Level 2 EVSE at multiple locations across Tennessee for its employees.
Great Smoky Mountains National ParkTN Workplace Charging Partner
In 2015, the Smokies National Park installed one DCFC unit and one Level 2 unit at BOTH of the park’s main Visitors Centers: one set at Sugarlands VC near Gatlinburg in TN, and one set at Oconaluftee VC near Cherokee in North Carolina.
EPRIDOE Workplace Charging Challenge Partner
The Electric Power Research Institute, or EPRI, installed this bank of 6 Level 2 charging systems in 2011 as part some research into EV charging and power management. This site has the canopy covered with solar cells, AND has an advanced battery and system monitoring built into it so that EPRI can study how the entire system works. The site has used for charging employee EVs since its inception.
City of KingsportTN Workplace Charging Partner
In 2011, the City of Kingsport in northeastern Tennessee was the first of the Tri-Cities to install Level 2 chargers in a primary downtown parking garage that is available for us by both citizens, visitors and city staff.
Cummins FiltrationTN Workplace Charging Partner
Cummins Filtration installed two Aerovironment Level 2 EVSE for their staff in December 2013 at the offices on the east side of Nashville. Not only did they help provide drivers an incentive to drive electric, they garnered points in the Nashville Mayor’s Workplace Challenge program.
